Picture of AberaeronAberaeron is a colourful little town located on the Cardigan Bay coastline in Ceredigion, West Wales. Located some 6 miles, 10km, north of New Quay and 13 miles, 20km, south of Aberystwyth it is a great base for walking the Ceredigion Coastal Path.

While driving along the busy A487 coast road one cannot help but notice the colourful Georgian terraced houses of Aberaeron, such a pleasant change from some of the drab grey roofed and pebble dashed houses to be found in some parts of Wales. So stop a while in this bustling little town, it is well worth a visit.

Town Centre

Once a flourishing port and harbour town Aberaeron is famed for its picturesque harbour with colourful boats bobbing on the water, themselves surrounded by colourful Georgian houses, once the domains of colourful ship's captains and harbour masters.

Today, Aberaeron remains a popular harbour and has developed a reputation with holiday makers and seafood gourmets. There are a number of restaurants to be found close to the picturesque harbour including the Hive on the Harbour and the Harbour Restaurant. Indeed, you can be sure of fresh fish when at high tide the harbour side fishmonger gets a tap on his shop window from the captain of the local fishing boat to sell him the latest catch.

River Aeron A short walk around the town itself reveals row after row of well proportioned Georgian terraced houses – with, it seems, a Pub for every street. I should be so lucky to own a paint shop in Aberaeron as the pubs compete with the houses to be the brightest and most colourful buildings in town.

And with all these Pubs it's no surprise that Aberaeron was a favourite haunt of that great Welsh poet and equally great Welsh boozer, Dylan Thomas. Information boards around the town describe the route of the Aberaeron Dylan Thomas Trail, probably more of a Pub-crawl than a walk!

Walks, Cycle Trails and Other Activities

The Ceredigion Coastal Path is the jewel in the crown for walkers who visit the Cardigan Bay coast of Wales. Stretching 32 miles, 50km, from Aberystwyth in the north, to Cardigan in the south Aberaeron is ideally placed for this and many other Welsh activity holidays.
