The Centre for International English offers academic and English language programmes for international students. These courses provide support and guidance to improve your academic and language skills within a UK university environment, with additional support and a dedicated welfare officer available for any student under the age of 18.
Staff at the Centre are qualified and professional teachers of the English language. They have lots of experience in working with international students, so they understand and are supportive of students’ needs and ambitions. Courses run by the Centre are accredited by the British Council and the Centre is proud to be an active member of Learn English in Wales and BALEAP (British Association of Lecturers of English for Academic Purposes), demonstrating its commitment to providing high quality English language programmes to students from all over the world.
Centre staff work closely with the University’s academic Faculties to make sure you get the best preparation and support for your academic studies.
English Language Programmes
The Centre for International English offers a range of fee paying English language Programmes, all of which run at the Treforest campus and are accredited by the British Council. There are two intakes each year for our Foundation and Pre-sessional English Language Programmes and each intake will lead to either our February or September academic intake.
Our Foundation programmes are designed to develop your academic, subject-specific and language skills so that you are prepared for undergraduate study at the University of South Wales.
Pre-sessional English Language Programmes
The Centre also offers a range of English language programmes for students holding a conditional offer for a degree programme at the University, but whose level of English language proficiency does not meet the requirement of their desired course. Our Pre-sessional programmes are designed to improve your English and academic skills and to help you communicate more effectively in an English-speaking environment.
Use the following tables to work out which Pre-sessional programme you would need to take.
In-sessional English Language Support Programmes
In-sessional classes are available to any overseas students who want to improve their academic English skills. The course is designed to practice the skills needed to write academic essays and reports, approaches to academic reading and research and also an introduction to presentation skills. The courses run in blocks of 8 -10 weeks each semester and classes last for two hours each week.
Topics covered in these classes typically include:
- Essay and report structure
- Essay question analysis
- Sentence and paragraph construction
- Sources and referencing
- Summarising and paraphrasing
University of South Wales English Language Tests
The University of South Wales now uses Password™ to test the level of English language proficiency of prospective students. However, this may not always be convenient for students, who therefore have the option of taking an alternative test through the Centre for International English. This test currently costs £80 and consists of a reading comprehension, an academic writing task and an extended discussion. Students holding conditional offers for a degree programme at University of South Wales can apply for the test by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tests are also available for prospective students outside of the UK through our network of trusted representatives. Please contact your in-country representative or the officer responsible for students from your country for further details.
Please note that international students wishing to attend a pre-degree programme such as the Pre-sessional or Foundation will need to take a Secure English Language Test in order to obtain a Tier 4 visa. Students should check the UKVI website for the list of approved SELTs.
